Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) training enables ordinary citizens to safely act as first responders in the event of a disaster. In the basic training course we deliver 24 hours of instruction (usually one 3-hour class per week for 8 weeks) that are a combination of classroom study and hands-on exercises. The course concludes with a simulated disaster in which the students demonstrate their skills with live victims. The topics covered in the course include:
- Session 1: February 10-Disaster Preparedness, Hazard Mitigation, Local Vulnerabilities
- Session 2: February 17-Fire Safety, Fire Suppression, Utility Controls
- Session 3: February 24-Disaster Medical Operations, Part 1 (Triage, Life Saving Interventions)
- Session 4: March 2-Light Search & Rescue Operations
- Session 5: March 9-Disaster Medical Operations, Part 2 (Public Health & Hygiene, Head to Toe Assessment, Basic Treatments)
- Session 6: March 16-Disaster Psychology & CERT Organization
- Session 7: March 23-Table Top Exercise & Final Exam
- Session 8: March 30-Final Exercise (Simulated Disaster Response)
This course is offered in partnership with the Volunteer Center of Whatcom County (VCWC). A Washington State Patrol background check (provided by VCWC) is required for enrollment. The class usually fills up quickly and we limit enrollment to each class at 25. It is suggested that you confirm your attendance asap. The cost is $25.00 for all 8 sessions and can be paid for on the first evening of classes by either cash or check. Credit or Debit cards are not accepted.
