Some long overdue maintenance work has been scheduled for the Sunshine Room during January which will close the room down January 7th through the 31st. Staff will be removing the ceiling and lights exposing the entire ceiling to apply a wood protection chemical to the entire wood structure. We are taking this precaution due to a concern that powder post beetles may still exist in some of the wood.
SVCA has hired Terminix to perform the chemical work. The chemical being used is called Borathor. The active ingredient in Borathor is borate, which is derived from the natural mineral borax. Borates are a natural and low toxicity approach to wood protection. This material is not hazardous under the criteria of the Federal OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.
Treatment of the wood and necessary staging of equipment will unfortunately mean closure of the Sunshine Room and adjacent Infant Room from January 7th to January 31st, 2019.
The upside? While we are addressing the pests, both the Sunshine Room and Infant Room will go through a minor renovation with new paint, repair of the ceiling system, new ceiling tiles, and repair of lighting fixtures.
We thank you for your understanding. If you have questions, please contact Recreation Manager Maddie Ottley at recmgr@suddenvalley.com.
