Recreation Center Main Parking Lot closed Friday 7-15-22

The Rec Center parking lot will be closed Friday, July 15, 2022.

The lot will be closed at 6:30am for cleaning, and then pavement markings will be applied midday.  The parking lot will be reopened as soon as markings are complete, hopefully by late afternoon.

Maintenance will be painting temporary parking stalls in the grass around the loop identified for temporary parking.  Access will be available to the library/adult pool for pedestrian walking, but there is no parking available until the lot is reopened as this parking lot will also be painted.  When finished, the lots will be smoother and allow for the orderly parking of more vehicles.

Thanks for your help in getting this done as smoothly as possible.

Pool Progress

Pool work is progressing.  Workers have removed the deck around both pools and hammered the existing plaster removing loose and peeling pockets of plaster in preparation for new plaster application.  Work is quite active at both sites with lots of work to make the pools ready for an anticipated July 15th opening.  Lots of effort going on to bring these pools up to new condition.  Simultaneously, Maddie Ottley, the SVCA Recreation Manager is working hard with the Department of Health to ensure all of the health and safety pool requirements have been achieved and will be in place to obtain our new permit.  The photo shows many areas where weakened plaster was detected and removed during this phase of the refurbishment.

YMCA Ceasing Operations in Sudden Valley

The Whatcom Family YMCA has notified their Sudden Valley employees that it will cease operations in the Valley on February 1st. Sudden Valley Community Association and the YMCA will work together during the wind down period to ensure a smooth transition and least disruption to members. The YMCA intends to continue ongoing programs until their last day of service on January 31st.

The YMCA and Sudden Valley are working together to formulate a mutually beneficial plan for supporting the 2018 Sudden Valley summer pool operation.

The SVCA Board of Directors was informed of this action in closed session last night Thursday November 30th.  Plans for pool and recreation services are a high priority for the Board which will begin preparing options at the December Finance Committee Meeting on Wednesday December 6th  in the MPR at 6:30, followed by a Board discussion on Thursday December 14th in the Fire Hall.  Members input is appreciated.

Additional details will be forthcoming as information develops
