Phase I Burn Ban Still in Effect

Please be aware that a Phase I Burn Ban is still in effect for Whatcom County. This stage of burn ban prohibits all open burning of residential yard debris and land-clearing materials. All issued, active burn permits are suspended under this ban.

Recreational fires will still be allowed but must meet specific criteria. You can read more about the required precautions and the standard rules for outdoor fires at the following links:

Change in Fire Danger for Whatcom County

When: 7/3/19.

Where: Washington State – Whatcom County.

What: The Washington State Department of Natural Resources has changed the fire danger from Low to Moderate for Whatcom County (see link for the area map): https://fortress.wa.gov/dnr/protection/firedanger/

Burn Ban restrictions Effective 12:01 a.m. July 13, 2018:

  • Rule burning (small debris disposal fires normally allowed when following specific rules) are not allowed in Snohomish, Island, Skagit, Whatcom, and San Juan counties.
  • Written burn permit burning also will no longer be allowed in Snohomish, Island, Skagit, Whatcom, and San Juan counties.
  • Campfires may be allowed in approved designated campgrounds. Always check with local campground hosts before lighting a campfire.
  • DNR is also increasing restrictions on outdoor burning on public lands. Campfires are still allowed in approve fire pits and to please be extra cautious during these very dry conditions.
