Snow Makes Road Conditions Challenging

Sudden Valley conditions are challenging with compacted snow and ice on the roadways. Steadily falling snow makes even plowed roads slippery. Crews have plowed and sanded all primary roads and most secondary roads, but are returning to primary roads because of the continued snowfall. Residential roads will be addressed as time allows, but probably not until snow stops falling.

Please stay off the roads if possible. This post will be updated later today.

SVCA Offices Closed

SVCA offices will be closed today, Wednesday, January 17th due to inclement weather. While roadways are currently passable, a prediction of more snow makes future road conditions unpredictable. Please check SuddenValley.com for road condition updates throughout the day. Call Security at 360-319-8200 to report road issues.

Snow Makes Road Conditions Unpredictable

Updated on 1/17/24 at 5:45 am

Sudden Valley roadways are passable with 2-3″ of snow on the ground. Because snow is predicted to continue falling for several more hours, future road conditions are unpredictable. SVCA is currently plowing and sanding the main roads and we expect to work on secondary roads later this morning. Residential roads will be addressed as time allows.

Please err on the side of caution and stay home if possible. This post will be updated later this morning.

Prepare for Snow

Up to 10″ of snow is forecast to fall in Sudden Valley beginning around midnight on Tuesday. To prepare, SVCA’s Maintenance Team sprayed a fresh coat of salt brine on known areas of icing. Additionally, a plowing crew is scheduled to begin work at 5am on Wednesday to get a head start on clearing the roads before the morning commute. Please assess road conditions before going out and, if you must travel, drive carefully!

Please review the snow removal plan HERE to make sure you know how best to manage this potential weather event. You can also watch a video presentation of the snow plan on YouTube.

Emergency Partial Road Closure

On Friday, December 22nd, the Lake Whatcom Water & Sewer District needs to complete an emergency repair on Hillside near Sigma. Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic around the workers. SVCA has alerted SSC so that disruption to trash collection will be minimized. The repair is expected to be completed today. Please drive carefully and follow the direction of flaggers!

Asphalt Paving Project to Resume

On Tuesday, December 12th our subcontractor, WWRS will be back onsite finishing the asphalt patching.  This will impact two locations temporarily for the day:

  • In the vicinity of 32 Harbor View – Road will be closed from late morning to mid-afternoon, and cars will need to detour.
  • Gate 1 Entrance next to Guard Shack – The entrance will be open, but residents will be slowed down on entry as paving crews will be working on both sides of the road.

Road Cleaning Causes Confusion

On Monday, December 4th, a resident let SVCA know that there might be an issue with the equipment being used to clean our roads. Because of this resident’s communication, we were able to address the problem right away. Here is a timeline of events:

  • SVCA was notified of the problem around 3:45 pm
  • Maintenance was on site at about 4:05 PM and observed a small amount of sheen visible, as shown in the photo above.
  • Maintenance contacted Allied Sweeping at 4:15 PM and notified them of a potential oil leak on one of their sweepers. Allied stated they would investigate and remove any malfunctioning equipment from service.
  • At about 4:20 PM Allied Sweeping removed their broom truck from service to investigate if it had a hydraulic leak.
  • At about 4:30 PM Allied Sweeping returned to the site with a vacuum sweeper and re-cleaned the street.

While we certainly don’t want to drip any kind of oil or other substance on SVCA roads, Allied Sweeping uses synthetic biodegradable food grade hydraulic fluid in their street sweepers (see SDS HERE). There are no special measures required for accidental release.

I believe that the response from Allied Sweeping was professional, timely, and appropriate. Most of all, I appreciate being alerted to a potential problem by an observant and quick-thinking resident. Please, if you see something, say something. You can reach SVCA at Office@SuddenValley.com or by calling 360-734-6430.
